DI Denis Hamilton - created by Tara Lyons
Detective Inspector Denis Hamilton is still somewhat of an enigma to readers. He shared In The Shadows with Grace Murphy and so never really shone in the limelight of the story; he never disclosed too much about his personal life. What we were told was that he was mixed-race and married – though both only being mentioned once, some readers missed these facts. Did you? He has an emotional guard protecting him but we’re never told why, and we know nothing of his background. Reviews of In The Shadows called DI Hamilton “grumpy", “firm but fair", “interesting” and said they “wanted to know more". And that is just what’s coming.
Hamilton’s in his mid-to-late thirties and worked for the Met Police for over 10 years. In his role as DI in the Murder Investigation Team, he’s partnered with DS Lewis Clarke for four of those five years. He’s a man of structure and routine – some may even say predictable. He has a soft spot for his team, but remains firmly in control. In The Shadows built him in that persona, and it was important to view him that way, because it is Hamilton’s choice people are kept at a distance. He doesn’t want to be the cop who brings his personal life to work; he doesn’t want his own experiences to jeopardise an investigation – but is that the case in book 2? Sometimes the past has a way of catching up with you…
The second book in the series will uncover more of Hamilton’s character, although he will share the story with another main character again. Book 2 will raise questions about the future of Hamilton’s team but it will also begin to resolve more about the man behind the DI title – who is Denis Hamilton?
For me, Denis Hamilton is an amalgamation of characters: from TV cops Luther and Frost, to personal friends and strangers observed in the street. It’s that which makes him such a curious and appealing man – we can all see a semblance of someone we know. In The Shadows wasn’t a tell all about his life, how he got to where he is and his future plans, but readers were given a glimpse into the kind of working inspector he is. Hamilton doesn’t get caught up in the team’s banter, but he likes a laugh. He’s dedicated to his job and gives credit to his team, willing to defend them whole-heartedly to his superior. But, what makes Denis Hamilton tick? Why is he working in the murder squad? What’s buried in his past? All will be revealed soon in book 2…
