Tom Gray - created by Alan McDermott
Tom Gray is a family man. His years in the British army are behind him, and he’s set up a successful business offering security services to major corporations and foreign governments. Life is good. Until the day a repeat offender takes the life of his young son, Daniel. His wife, Dina, is overcome with grief, and months later she takes her own life. Gray is left with nothing. Not even the thought of the killer rotting in jail can take away the hurt. So when Stuart Boyle walks free from court, Gray feels there’s something fundamentally wrong with the justice system.
Gray briefly considers his options, but there aren’t many. He could start a petition asking for tougher sentences, or he could go out and confront Boyle and get the retribution he feels he deserves. But for Gray, revenge just isn’t enough. It’s time to make the government sit up and take notice. With help from some former colleagues, he kidnaps five repeat offenders and takes them to a location in the Sussex countryside. MI5 learns of his plan as the news channels play a video created by Gray. It shows the five prisoners being held in cells, and a website has been created to let the people of Britain vote on their fate. It isn’t long before Gray’s hideout is discovered, but that isn’t enough to save the young hostages. Gray has thought it all through, and nothing is going to prevent him from seeing it through to the bitter end.
To some, Gray as the anti-hero, but as the series progresses, his loyalty to his friends and his desire to see right prevail makes him the man everyone wants on their side. From British thugs and Russian gangsters in London to African warlords and international terrorists, Gray will take on anyone who dares to hurt those close to him.
Gray Justice kicks off the series. It was intended to be a standalone novel, but after the initial feedback it seemed many people wanted more of him. Thankfully I’d left an opening for his return, and the rest, as they say, is history. The Series runs to 6 books and has spawned an MI5 spinoff featuring many of the characters that fans will be familiar with. That book is already with the publisher and I’m just waiting to hear about a release date. I’m not sure where Tom goes from here, but it’s going to be fun finding out!
