Beneath the water the body sank rapidly. Above her on dry land, the nightmare was just beginning.
When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip-off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.
The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news twenty-six years ago.
As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker. A woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realises this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.
Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone is keeping secrets. Someone who doesn’t want this case solved. And they’ll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.
Brilliant author Robert Bryndza has penned a thriller which in my opinion is even better than the first two in his world-famous DCI Erika Foster series - and that is saying something - those books are absolutely stunning! In Dark Water the author has taken me on another thrilling, adrenaline-pumping ride alongside Erika and her team. Though third in a series, this book can very well be read as a standalone.
The incidental gruesome discovery of a child's skeleton in the freezing depths of a disused quarry throws Erika and her team in an intense, frantic investigation to solve a decades-old mystery. It is soon confirmed that the skeleton is that of Jessica Collins, a seven-year-old girl who had vanished into thin air twenty-six years previously, leaving a distraught family behind. The original investigation into the disappearance yielded no results and the girl remained missing without trace. But now her remains have been found and Erika won't stay quiet and will do whatever it takes to bring the person/s responsible to justice.
Who did this to Jessica? Who dumped her body on the bottom of the quarry as if she were an old tyre? Why? Erika will have to uncover secrets, explore the sick minds of disgusting paedophiles and go over the previous investigation with a fine-tooth comb. But it seems someone is not happy that Jessica's remains have been found and is trying hard to throw the investigators off the right track. Who is behind it all?
OMG!! What an amazing book! Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop! From the first chapter I was hooked and held bound and captive till the end. I even skipped a meal and read with a grumbling stomach and one night I woke up in ungodly hours to read some more chapters, as Jessica's story kept rolling in my mind and wouldn't let me rest. Having young kids myself, I couldn't imagine being in Jessica's parents' horrendous situation - and they'd been in this limbo for twenty-six years!! Who would do such a horrible thing to a little girl??
The author's writing is just superb and after reading three of his books, I have to say that it's getting better and better. The plot is very rich, intricate, tangled and perplexing. It is fast-paced and suspenseful. All characters, especially Erika and her team, consisting of DI Peterson and DI Moss (what a fab team!!), are very interesting and realistic and I can already foresee certain developments taking place within the team in future books.
Thanks to numerous twists and turns and the occasional red herring I was kept engrossed, adding and crossing out names from my suspect list. You cannot trust anyone in this story and many characters could potentially have had something to do with Jessica's death and disappearance. The ending - totally unexpected!! I could never have guessed what had really happened.
This book is just fabulous, and absolutely the author's best to date!! I really loved and enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.
