Chilling family secrets, obsession and decades-old lies. How well do we really know the ones we love? A gripping psychological thriller from the #1 bestselling author of Look Behind You.
Twenty-five years ago Katie ran away from home and never came back. But now she’s suddenly reappeared in her best friend Olivia’s life—in the form of a chilling confession. Olivia’s father-in-law, wracked with guilt, says he murdered her all those years ago. Tom suffers from Alzheimer’s and his story is riddled with error and confusion. Except for one terrifying certainty: he knows where the body is buried.
As Olivia and the police piece together the evidence, they are left with one critical question. They have a crime, they have a confession, and now they have a body—but can any of it be trusted?
Holy Moly! This book is absolutely one of the best psychological thrillers I've read in a long time. As soon as I read the blurb, I knew this was going to be a cracker of a thriller... just not this good!
"Every action has a reaction. Every deed has a consequence. There's always a price to pay."
Family secrets can be destructive. They wedge a boulder between those who know them and those who don't. When exposed, as happens in this book, they test a family's bond to the limit, shattering lives and relationships in the process.
Alzheimer's is a terrible disease affecting the brain and bringing about hallucinations, delusions and confusion. So, how much reliable a confession made by a person suffering from this disease can be? Tom, Olivia's father-in-law, stuns everyone when he confesses to have murdered Olivia's best friend Katie, twenty-five years before. But that can't be true! The old man, has always been a gentle giant who wouldn't even kill a spider or a mouse, let alone a person. So why is he coming out with this absurd story now? Could he really have killed Katie all those years ago? Or is he just imagining everything in his confused state? But if so, how does he know where the body is buried?
Thanks to Sibel's beautiful and flawless prose, reading this book was extremely enjoyable. Pages just flew by. As I was reading, I kept telling myself "Oh this is just brilliant!", especially when I reached some mind-blowing twist or turn. A well-thought out, clever plot, unwavering suspense and tension from start to finish and chapters ending in cliffhangers kept me pinned to my kindle until I had practically devoured the whole book.
All characters, dialogues and locations are very realistic and vividly described. I felt as if I was there in Olivia's kitchen or in Tom's room at the hospital with the other characters. I admired and loved Olivia for her relentless determination to seek the truth. The author takes us inside her head as she tries to understand what had really happened twenty-five years before.
The final twist was totally unexpected. The ending - the cherry on the cake. While it closes the story quite satisfactorily it is also a very debatable one. You have to read the book to the end to understand what I'm referring to.
Overflowing with secrets, lies, deceit and betrayals this book is simply amazing and I highly recommend it. Impressive Job Sibel. Well Done!!
