But no one sees what happens behind closed doors.
And sometimes those doors should never be opened…
Sal and Charlie are married. They love each other. But they aren’t happy. Sal cannot leave, no matter what Charlie does – no matter how much it hurts.
OK Lisa Hall! You've just knocked my socks off!!! I've just finished reading your amazing book and WOW!! You've turned my mind upside down and inside out and I'm NOT exaggerating here! At one point I had to reread some chapters as I couldn't figure out what was happening... until suddenly the penny dropped and I realised what you were doing. Hmmm... That was clever... very clever!! I've never read anything remotely similar and let me say this: I think it's just BRILLIANT!
"Remember, I love you. More than anything and more than anyone else ever will."
This book reminded me of an old Farrah Fawcett movie. It is the story of Sal and Charlie, a married couple with a small girl, Maggie. While Charlie is the breadwinner going out to work as a corporate lawyer, Sal stays at home taking care of Maggie. To all outsiders, it's the perfect family setting. However no one knows what really goes on within the confines of their lovely house.
"It's me and you, together forever, remember?"
As much as these words sound full of love and passion, their true meaning can be just as terrifying when domestic abuse is added to the equation.
Gosh... As I was reading I found myself clenching my fists with rage and though I knew that these situations are unfortunately not uncommon in real life, I found myself asking "How can anyone be so cruel?" "Or more properly how can anyone endure such maltreatment?" It's just unacceptable!
It's hard to believe that this is Ms. Hall's debut novel. It's so well written, full of suspense and nail-biting tension throughout, you would think it's the work of a well-seasoned author. But I couldn't read this book fast enough. Chapters alternate between Sal's and Charlie's pov. I really liked how the author describes all scenes/incidents from both the main characters' perspectives.
A simple plot with relatively few characters - all believable and well-portrayed - is exactly what makes the final twist even more shocking and mind-blowing. I just knew there was a volcano accumulating magma somewhere below the surface and that it wasn't long before it erupted.
This is the kind of book you want to start all over again as soon as you finish it. At least that's how I felt. This book is a MUST to all those loving a good psychological thriller complete with an absolutely phenomenal twist and I highly recommend it.
With thanks to Carina UK for approving my request to read and review this book through NetGalley.
Lisa loves words, reading and everything there is to love about books. She has dreamed of being a writer since she was a little girl - either that or a librarian - and after years of talking about it, was finally brave enough to put pen to paper (and let people actually read it). Lisa lives in a small village in Kent, surrounded by her towering TBR pile, a rather large brood of children, dogs, chickens and ponies and her long-suffering husband. She is also rather partial to eating cheese and drinking wine.
