DI Jessica Daniel is not having a good week. Her wallet's been nicked, the refurbished incident room is already falling apart, and a new football-mad constable is driving her crazy. She also has bigger things on her mind. A student's body has been dumped in a wheelie bin at the back of a university building, with a vague link to an Olympic medallist and a theory that it could have been an induction which went wrong.
There's the tattooed shop raider who has her team stumped; someone attacking lone women; a chief inspector who seems to have a problem with her; and someone putting letters through her front door insisting that she's caught 'the wrong man'.
Worlds are colliding for Jessica - and, if she's not careful, someone close to her might not make it out in one piece.
Murders, armed robberies, pickpocketing and more. DI Jessica Daniel is up to her neck in unsolved cases and problems in 'Scarred for life', Kerry Wilkinson's fantastic 9th instalment in the series. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy.
As always Kerry's excellent writing skills make reading a delightful experience. This book is full of fast-paced action and numerous laugh-out-loud moments. Though we have multiple cases with parallel investigations going on, you never feel confused or wondering what's happening. Short chapters, often ending in cliffhangers enhance the reading experience.
I love Jessica's feisty character and ironic dialogue. Geez! this woman doesn't stop for one second!
All characters are interesting and brilliantly set out. I like DC Archie Davey, the new footy fanatic constable with his Manc twang. I'm sure we'll see much more of this great character in future books.
Poor Jessica has a lot to contend with in this book. Strange things are happening at the station. She realises that for unknown reasons she's ended up in the DCI's bad books and someone is trying hard to isolate her and derail her murder investigation. But who and why?
By the end, loose ends will need to be tied up, complex webs untangled, and important decisions made.
About the ending, all I can say is that it was totally unexpected and left me literally stunned and dreading the wait for the next book.
Excellent read; highly recommended!!
