If you like The Twilight Zone or Night Gallery, then you will love this collection of short stories that fall in the same vein of horror as Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and Dean Koontz.
The author has kindly forwarded me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This book isn't exactly the sort I usually like to read, however each time I started to read a new story, I found myself enthralled and waiting for the final twist. Each story took me to totally different, well-described settings and characters.
All stories start as 'normal every day situations' such as a woman travelling on a train observing her fellow passengers, a housewife preparing dinner or a man entering his favourite diner, however toward the end, the author skillfully twists each story to something really unexpected, even bizarre. I was actually left slack-jawed a few times. You never know what's waiting for you in the last paragraph.
I wouldn't describe these stories as macabre. The majority I would call peculiar or freakish, others creepy. There is one that reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, more of the fantasy type, there's one that tilts more toward the sci-fi kind and unfortunately there are a couple whose ending disappointed me.
The greatest advantage of short stories like these is that when your time is limited, you can read one without interrupting any storyline between sittings.
As already said, stories with weird endings are not exactly my piece of cake, however I think that these are really well-written. If you can read disquieting stuff without cringing, then this is a delicious cocktail I'm sure your taste buds would savour.
