Twenty years ago you were forced to give your daughter up. Now she’s back. Or is she?
Women who’ve had to give up children for adoption are being killed. A knock at their front door begins a nightmare from which they will never wake up.
East London Detective Ruby Preston and her team must hunt down a disturbed individual before someone else is taken. But when bodies start turning up, staged in perfect, domestic scenes, it carries the echo of a memory in Ruby's mind. The tinkling of a music box. A mother and child reunion...
Then just as Ruby thinks they've made a breakthrough, she receives a sinister email, and the case takes a terrifying personal twist.
Can Ruby catch the killer before they strike again? Or will her troubled past catch up with her first?
Having read and enjoyed Caroline Mitchell's spooky DC Jennifer Knight series (I highly recommend that btw), I was so excited when the author and publisher announced the release of 'Love You to Death', and even more so when I was sent an ARC. Set in London and without any supernatural element, this is the first book in a brand new thrilling crime series by this brilliant author.
"My name is Lucy. I'm your daughter."
We've all read about or seen real-life documentaries about parents being reunited with the children they had given away for adoption many years previously. These are usually happy ending, heart-warming, tear-jerking stories.
Well, this book's story runs along similar lines, however there are no fairy-tale reunions here. The tears shed in this book are not of joy, but out of pain and horror. This is a hair-raising book harbouring one of the creepiest serial killers I've ever read about. Caroline Mitchell has created a monster!
Every story deserves a happy ever after and that's what drives Lucy's warped mind forwards as she searches for her mother. Finding her mother has become an addiction and she soon starts ticking off a list. But when possible candidates fail short of her expectations, well, that spells nothing but trouble for the poor mummies!
The heroine of this book is DS Ruby Preston, from Shoreditch Serious Crime Unit. It is her task to try and identify who this Lucy is and stop her before she murders more victims, but this won't be easy. And when Ruby is personally contacted by the killer, she realises that Lucy is very close, much closer to her than she had thought...
All characters in this book are very realistic and complex. The author has given them features, depth and background. I could imagine them in flesh and blood as if they were old acquaintances, though I wouldn't want to meet Lucy in real life! I liked Ruby. She's not your classic police officer. She's a bold, strong-headed sergeant who's not exactly whiter than white and that makes her all the more realistic. Her background (not short of pains) and her close ties to the notorious Crosby criminal family do not exactly show her in a good light at work. But she doesn't give a damn and is not afraid to bend the rules in order to achieve results.
Lucy is a character right out of classic horror films and books. She has evoked all sorts of emotions in me. She's creepy, dangerous, unpredictable and terrifying. She's like a cobra that strikes unexpectedly when you're least expecting it. But is it possible to feel sympathy for a serial killer?
In this book, and especially with Lucy, I think the author has shown more than ever her superb ability in creating original lifelike characters and breathing life into them. I could almost feel Lucy's menacing fingers grazing my face as she reached out to me from the words I was reading. Yes, it felt that realistic!!
With excellent characterisation, a clever, pacy plot full of twists and turns, terrifying nail-biting scenes and a breathtaking, heart-pounding finale, this is another compelling thrilling read by Caroline Mitchell not to be missed. Roll on book 2!!
With massive thanks to the author and Bookouture publishers for an ARC of this book.
