How do you catch a killer who leaves no trace?
A victim killed with a single, precise stab to the heart appears at first glance to be a robbery gone wrong. A caring, upstanding social worker lost to a senseless act of violence. But for Detective Kim Stone, something doesn’t add up.
When a local drug addict is found murdered with an identical wound, Kim knows instinctively that she is dealing with the same killer. But with nothing to link the two victims except the cold, calculated nature of their death, this could be her most difficult case yet.
Desperate to catch the twisted individual, Kim’s focus on the case is threatened when she receives a chilling letter from Dr Alex Thorne, the sociopath who Kim put behind bars. And this time, Alex is determined to hit where it hurts most, bringing Kim face-to-face with the woman responsible for the death of Kim’s little brother – her own mother.
As the body count increases, Kim and her team unravel a web of dark secrets, bringing them closer to the killer. But one of their own could be in mortal danger. Only this time, Kim might not be strong enough to save them…
Speechless! That's how I was left upon finishing Angela Marsons' 5th DI Kim Stone thriller, 'Blood Lines'. How can this author come up with such brilliant books time and time again??!! This book is absolutely amazing!!
'Blood Lines' can be read as a standalone, but since it features some characters that appeared in 'Evil Games', I would recommend reading that first before this one. 'Blood Lines' is divided into two main simultaneous subplots. In one DI Kim Stone investigates a string of murders. In the other, she fights to keep her own sanity intact.
The body of a well-off woman is found in her own car. The victim sports just one fatal wound. Nothing seems to have been taken and there appears to be no motive for killing her. When a second victim, again sporting just one similar wound is discovered the following day, Kim thinks there might be a connection. But the two women couldn't be any more different, in every aspect. Could this be the deed of a serial killer or not? Together with Bryant and the rest of her team, Kim starts her investigation. If she wants to solve this case she has to try and find the elusive thread that might link the two victims. Will she make it on time before another victim is found?
Kim's arch enemy, Dr Alexandra (Alex) Thorne, is back in the game, once more messing with her head... but this time she's doing so from inside her prison cell! Alex is a tremendously clever character. Filled with rage and hatred, she's as evil as ever or even more. She's obsessed by Kim and knows her weakest points and how to attack her right where it hurts. She had already brought her to her knees once. But now she's determined to complete the deed. Can Kim survive another confrontation with the sociopath? Is she ready to relive again her painful past, lock horns with her demons and come out in one piece?
In this book Kim made me laugh with her usual sarcastic remarks and retorts, but she also almost made me cry as she fought her internal demons. She reveals the soft tissue she hides under her hard shell much more than she did in other books. Her sensitivity and big heart are brought more to the fore. Once again she shows her skill as a brilliant detective and empathetic team leader, even while fighting her own battles.
As usual Marsons grabs the reader by the throat as from the first page and never lets go. The plot is fast-paced, tense and cleverly woven. Chapters are as I like them: short and ending in cliffhangers, making you want to keep on reading. All characters are highly realistic, authentic and lifelike and the finale totally unexpected, heart-pounding, sad and happy at the same time, but satisfying. All in all, a perfect formula that kept me engrossed, happily reading for hours.
All the stars lighting a clear night sky are not enough to rate this book. Believe me!! I just LOVE this author and LOVE Kim Stone!! I cannot recommend this series enough. If you haven't yet read any of Angela Marsons' books, you're seriously missing out. Well done Angie for another enjoyable, mind-blowing read. Roll on book 6. I'm already missing Kim!!
With huge thanks to Bookouture for an ARC of this book through NetGalley.
Angela Marsons is the author of Amazon #1 Bestseller SILENT SCREAM.
She lives in the Black Country with her partner, their bouncy Labrador and a swearing parrot.
She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read "Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people's".
After years of writing relationship based stories (My Name Is and The Middle Child) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.
She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 8 books. The second, third and fourth books in the Kim Stone series, EVIL GAMES, LOST GIRLS and PLAY DEAD are also now available.
